Since June 2004, the Collection of Photography, part of the Art Library, is situated under the same roof as the Helmut Newton Foundation at the Museum of Photography at Jebensstraße 2 opposite the Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten.
The aim is to bring together the many different aspects of the photography found in the National Museums in Berlin in one single exhibition centre. Since summer 2004, the premises are re-build in serveral stages.
Reconstruction of the Kaisersaal at the Museum of Photography until 2010
Due to the reconstruction of the Kaisersaal, the Collection of Photography will close its branch at the Museum of Photography opposite Zoologischer Garten railway station until 2010. The reconstruction of the Kaisersaal is of significant importance for the Art Library, as it follows the aim of creating an exhibition platform for historic and contemporary photography which, on a technical level, can compete internationally.
In recent years, the long wait for the reconstruction has been tided over with successful exhibitions by contemporary artists who – to a greater or lesser extent – turned the ruinous environment of the Kaisersaal into the subject matter of their work. This ranged from Raimund Kummer’s steel girders to Reiner Leist’s illuminated boxes, from Raymond Depardon’s films to Regina Schmeken’s large scale photographs.
