The
exhibition contains a replica of a painted house façade. In front of this
stands a modern Kwakiutl canoe which was made especially for the museum
in 1990. On show inside the 'big house' construction are the oldest Berlin
possessions from this region, collected by James Cook. They include decorated
household items but, above all, ceremonial objects and masks. Four large
Kwakiutl masks of mythical monster birds are presented. On the rear side
of the façade are two original Haida houseposts carved in the shape of
grizzly bears. Next to these is a richly carved and painted chief's seat
of the Bella Bella.
