Today,
Native North Americans are no longer a 'dying race', as was often proclaimed.
They are an integral part of modern American and Canadian society, where
they have to maintain their position. For this reason, the exhibition
also spotlights important historical developments which still influence
the lives of Indians on and off the reservation. Highly symbolic concepts,
generally considered to be 'typically Indian', such as moccasins, medicine
bags, tomahawks and sacred pipes, are presented at the beginning of the
regional section. The exhibition ends with a selection of modern Indian
art to show not only how Indians are asserting themselves within modern
American society, but also how far their cultures remain alive and creative.
