The storage
rooms of the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin-Dahlem contain about 30,000
objects relating to North American Indians. After the Second World War
it was impossible to organize a comprehensive exhibition, because parts
of the collection had disappeared, presumably for ever, and the available
space was far too limited.
In 1991-92, items once confiscated by the Soviet Union were returned to
Berlin. In addition, the museums of European art moved from Berlin-Dahlem
to new premises. For the first time, this created the opportunity to arrange
an exhibition on the 'Native North Americans' in an area of about 1000
mē.
