These
powerful and domineering masks that are a requisite for rituals of death
and for defence against the dreaded witches are not intended to be 'beautiful'.
On the contrary, in accordance with their purpose masks should be frightening,
even repulsive in appearance. Usually made of cloth or fibrous materials,
the masks' garments are not ornate or attractive, and therefore have received
little serious attention from an art historical viewpoint.
