Masks and Secret Societies

In general little is known about the actual meaning of masks. For some African peoples they are the representation, even the incarnation of the ancestors and spirits. Yet, despite their various human attributes, masks are beings of their own, that are activated by magic medicine and thus made dangerous. Women and non-initiates avoid the proximity of masks, and even members of secret societies act with caution toward them.
