Carvings
are always made from a single tree trunk, whereas joining several pieces
is a rare exception. The axe, adze, chisel and hammer are the main tools
of the wood carver. Finished objects are coloured either by singeing or
by applying soot and colours made from minerals and plants. It is believed
that the African artist is not intend upon portraying humans in a more-or-less
casual aspect of time or perspective, but instead to discover their very
existence and concealed nature.
