In
Africa artistic creation generally belongs to the sphere of men. During
a three-year itinerant apprenticeship, the pupil learns by observing and
imitating. At the end of this period there is no final examination.
Wood carvers work either full-time or part-time, depending on the number
of orders As a rule, they are highly regarded within their community,
but in in western Sudan the special artists' caste are viewed with disdain.
Whereas prominent artists do not necessarily attained leading political
positions, kings and other dignitaries have won acclaim as carvers and
smiths.
