Magic
medicine is an integral part of daily life in Africa. It is beleived that
with the help of magic medicine, feats can be achieved and goals attained
that would be regarded as "supernatural" by Europeans. Africans differentiate
between easier and more difficult practices, that require - depending
on the circumstances - additional means of help, that is "medicine", or
the special talent of the person administering. Medicine provides protection
against all forms of malevolence and all things hostile. Above all medicine
is indispensable in the cult of the dead, for it wards off the dangerous
spirits of the deceased.
