African
artists incorporated the influences which they gained from Europeans into
their art. The history of many pieces on exhibition is thus closely bound
with the encounter of Africa and Europe. For example, the production of
gift articles was often adapted to European interests.
Since the beginning of the 20th century European and North American artists
found inspiration in African art. Painters such as Max Pechstein, Emil
Nolde and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff were motivated by objects in the Berlin
collection.
