Gallery of Romantic Art
On 19.02.2001 the Gallery of Romantic Art has been closed. From
3.12.2001 all the collection will be reunited with the collection
of the Old National
Gallery and the works are shown on Museum Island.
The collection
The twenty-four paintings by Caspar David Friedrich at the heart of this collection
constitute the largest number of works by him to be united under one roof. They
stem from all phases of his development and provide an excellent insight into
the life-work of the foremost representative of German Romantic art. The C. D.
Friedrich collection is harmoniously complemented by fifteen of Karl Friedrich
Schinkel's paintings: imaginative landscapes and architectural visions.
Carl Blechen's idiosyncratic paintings form a third area of emphasis. His characteristic
use of brilliant colours and unconventional motifs was far ahead of his time.
In addition the Gallery of Romantic Art also owns portraits by Philipp Otto Runge
and Gottlieb Schick, landscapes by Joseph Anton Koch and Carl Rottmann and major
works by the "Nazarener" who were active in Rome. Paintings of the Biedemeier
period are situated to the west of the entrance hall. They include views of Berlin
by Eduard Gaertner and Johann Erdmann Hummel, landscapes, genre paintings and
portraits from Carl Spitzweg to Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller.
